Here’s a letter I posted on MySpace, to my fANDROiDS,
May 17, 2007. Enjoy. :-)
June 1st is the release of “Violet Stars Happy Hunting!”
Janelle Monáe Forum:
Hey! Okay, so yeah, I finally posted up my new tune “Violet Stars Happy Hunting!” from my debut suite release Metropolis Suite I of IV: “The Chase.” I was not going to at first, to be perfectly honest with you, until member #12354 in The Wondaland Arts Society said something that I could not argue with. The conversation went a little something like this:
Me: “Dude, I don’t think we should put it up. I don’t think human beings are gonna like it or wanna hear this now. (Looks down and thinks hard) Maybe after I’m dead, it could be released… in year 2719, when the time is right.” (looks up at the ceiling and smiles)
Lord of the CyberSoul Patrol: “Jane, look at it this way, it’s kinda like sending your baby who was born with a blue hand off to school for the first time. Sure you’d be nervous that he/she would get teased or picked on, but you gotta let that blue-handed baby go someday.”
Me: (scratches head) “You know what, you’re right my friend. Give me five minutes to think about that. (Five minutes goes by) Then it is so my fellow Wondaland Arts Society member, we will post it, now. The blue-handed baby must go!” (With a finger in the air)
And it was simple as that. It was posted. :-):-/:-^
I would like to say a few things regarding my release. Alright, drum rolls please! I am not signed to a major label. This will not be a major distributed project. I have chosen to not wait on major distribution, which means my goal is not focused on selling a million records or numbers. However, it will be available on iTunes, Amazon, my website, at my performances, etc. I want my true fans, early adopters, and trendsetters to have the music first because they care and want to have it. I have a mission to accomplish which can not wait on the music industry to change to make it happen. I do hope you guys understand that times are changing and it is up to you, literally, to make sure the artists you wanna hear get heard. Even if you don’t care too much for me or my music, try and support some stuff that’s cool so it can stay cool.
I will say that I have been blessed enough to have a great support system, The Wondaland Arts Society and Big Boi (Luscious Leftfoot). That may sound like a small amount people and yes, you are right, it is! However, we work with the resources we have available and keep it moving. There is not a day that goes by that we are not working on new concepts, ideas, marketing strategies, video treatments, interludes, cotton candy flavors, etc. for “Metropolis”, all four of the suites. I wanna add that almost everyday, someone writes in and asks how they can be of some help and assistance to the project. I so appreciate that. We are always welcoming good people into this project, so Jam!
If you don’t know this by now, I am a member of the Good Team. I want to do something GOOD for people.
Peace to the middle east.”
